2.

Who is he?
The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel by American
writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. (September 24, 1896
– December 21, 1940) He also was an American
novelist, essayist, and short story writer.
One of the most significant writers of the "lost
generation" of that time. With his books and
lifestyle, Francis significantly influenced the
mindset of young people in the decade after the
First World War, which became known as the
"jazz age".

3.

The main plot
The Great Gatsby follows Nick Carraway, a
young man from the midwest who moves to New
York. He meets Jay Gatsby, a mysterious
millionaire, and spends time with his cousin,
Daisy, and her husband, Tom. As Nick learns
more about the dynamic in East and West Egg,
he also learns that Gatsby is in love with Daisy
and wants Nick to help him rekindle their
relationship.
What at first seems like a perfect match soon
results in a tragic event that should shatter the
lives of everyone involved. But, as Nick learns,
the people he’s surrounded himself with are
vapid and entirely without empathy.

Problems and themes of the novel
The main theme of the work is the
inequality of people in society.
Everything is built on the reprehensible
relations of rich and poor.
Next, the problem of living in illusions is
touched upon, in the very American
dream, where in reality everything is not
as colorful and rosy as in dreams.
The meaning of the novel is that life
presents different challenges, after which
a person becomes stronger, but it is not
always possible to meet a good ending at
the end of the path. Luck, like love, is a
capricious feeling.

5.

Stylistic techniques
“If personality is an unbroken series of successful gestures, then there was something
gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life, as if he were
related to one of those intricate machines that register earthquakes ten thousand miles
away.”
The reader understands that Gatsby has incredible insight, and that it is around this
person that the plot of the work and the parallel disclosure of the characters will develop.

The main characters
Nick Carraway is a recent graduate of Yale University who is
moving to Long Island after getting a job as a bond salesman. He
is relatively innocent and gentle, especially compared to the
hedonistic elite among whom he lives. However, over time, he
becomes smarter, more observant and even disappointed, but
never becomes cruel or selfish. Nick is the narrator of the novel,
but he has some of the qualities of the main character, since he is
the character who undergoes the most significant changes in the
novel.
Ambitious and idealistic, Gatsby is the epitome of "a man who
has achieved his own success." He is a reserved young
millionaire who has grown from humble residents of the
American Midwest to a prominent position among the elite of
Long Island. He throws lavish parties that he never seems to
attend, and is obsessed with the objects of his desires,
especially his long-time love Daisy. It seems that all Gatsby's
actions are caused by this purposeful, even naive love. He is
the main character of the novel, because his actions determine
the plot.

My opinion
To my mind, this is a very interesting and exciting book with deep themes and
problems. Each character from the Great Gatsby is unique and inimitable
in its own way. It is worth of reading, because this is a book of world
classics from an amazing writer with his own unique style of writing. I
would recommend this book to everyone who is in this class. I'm sure none
of you will regret reading it.
