Tender is the Night was
published in 1933. Set
between 1913 and 1930,
mostly in Southern France
and Switzerland, the novel
tells the story of what
happens when the
extremes of love,
madness, and ambition
play out against a highglamour backdrop, in a
physical and psychological
landscape torn apart by
World War I.

6. The plot of the book

Book One begins in June of 1925, at a beachfront
hotel on the French Riviera, near the city of Cannes.
Mrs. Speers and her daughter, Rosemary Hoyt, arrive on holiday . She
quickly makes friends with Dick and Nicole Diver. Encouraged by her
mother, the young actress finds herself falling in love with Dick.
Chapters 1-25 tell the love story of Dick and Rosemary.
