In Beginner 2, we learned that we use the prepositions 'in', 'on' and 'at' to talk about when
something happens.
'In' + months, seasons, years, 'the morning', 'the afternoon', 'the evening’
'On' + days of the week, dates, 'the weekend' (US English)
'At' + times, holidays, 'at night', 'the weekend' (UK English)
Ago
We can use phrases with 'ago' to show how long something happened before now.
I drank a cup of tea ten minutes ago. (Ten minutes before now)
I bought a bottle of milk three days ago. (Three days before now)
I started school five years ago. (Five years before now)

Last
We can use phrases with 'last' to mean the most recent or the nearest to now.
I watched a film on TV last night. (At night yesterday)
I baked a chocolate cake last Saturday.
I visited my brother in Russia last year. (The year before this year)
Notice we do not say 'last day', 'last morning', 'last afternoon' or 'last evening'. We use the
word 'yesterday', or, if it was earlier today, 'today', 'this morning', 'this afternoon' or 'this
evening’
I met my friend at a café yesterday.
I went horse riding yesterday afternoon.
I got up at seven o'clock this morning. (Earlier today)
