CARE
TOPIC: PROJECT HOPE
3.
A BRIEF HISTORYProject HOPE is an international health care organization founded in
the United States in 1958; a humanitarian NGO. It all started when
Project HOPE’s founder, Dr William B. Walsh, M.D., was moved by
poor health conditions he encountered in the South Pacific, while
serving on a Navy destroyer during World War II. In 1958, Dr Walsh
worked with U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower in order to charter a
U.S. Navy hospital ship for $1/year. A donor contributed $150 to get
Project HOPE started and, with the support of corporations and
generous benefactors, the ship was transformed into the SS HOPE.

HOW IT IS FINANCED• In
some
countries,
they
form
partnerships
with
local
organizations to seek funding to implement activities together.
• Also they receive donations from individuals, companies,
religious organizations etc.
• Also through fundraising events.
8.
ACHIEVEMENTS• In 2005 When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, HOPE sent
volunteer medical response teams to the area, where they provided
nursing care to people in need.
• HOPE continues to provide aid to the people on the Gulf Coast who
were hit by Hurricane Katrina. In the spring of 2006, they helped staff
the U.S. Navy hospital ship, known as the Mercy, with volunteer
physicians and nurses to South Asia.
• In response to the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Project HOPE
helped to coordinate volunteer medical staffers to fill out the
complement of the USNS Comfort etc.
9.
DRAWBACKS• Not enough funds
• If located in an earthquake region and while offering assistance
there’s another earthquake leading to loss of more lives and
medical tools.
• Hostility from the people in the vicinity maybe cause they are
uneducated or one reason or another.
10.
RELATIONS WITH MY COUNTRY• Project HOPE has been improving health outcomes in Nigeria
since 2012.
• In 2014 during the Ebola crisis, Project HOPE collaborated with
the CDC Foundation, the African Field Epidemiology Network
(AFENET) and the College of Medicine at the University of
Lagos (CMUL) to improve infection prevention and control
knowledge and practices in healthcare facilities.
• In 2017, Project HOPE deployed a team of health and nutrition
experts to assess the humanitarian and health needs of
internally displaced persons affected by Boko Haram in Borno
State, North-East Nigeria.
