VANDE MATARAM• Before Jana Gana Mana Vande Mataram as a
Indian anthem.
• Vande Mataram is a Sanskrit poem written by
Bankim Chandra Chettarjee in 1870.
• Published on 1882.
• This poem was first sung by Rabindranath
Tagore in 1896.

national anthem.
• He was born on 7 May 1861.
• He wrote poetry as an 85 years old.
• He was also known as “The Bard of Bangal”.

HISTORY OF ANTHEM• The poem was published in January 1912.
• Outside of Kolkata ,the song was first sung by
himself at a session in Besant Theosophical
college in Madanpalle, Andhra Pradesh on 28
February .

for the first time as a sovereign body on 14
August 1947 at midnight.

Why did Vande Mataram not getchosen as the National Anthem?
• Islam being monotheist religion, the elevation of
any deity or individual to a divine status does not
sit well.
• Vande Mataram ,in some of its verses invoke
Hindu deities.
• Additionally the fact that song was included in
Ananadamath does not sit well with some
people.
• It was adopted by the constituent assembly of
India as the national anthem.

USAGE• It is played on national holidays,festivals and
sporting events.
• In our India there are in most of school daily
sing the national song.

out.
