What is it?
• University of Oxford is university located in
Oxford, UK. This is the eldest English-speaking
university in the world, also it is first university in
the UK. Exactly date of foundation is unknown,
but there are proofs that teachers taught there since
11th century. Oxford University is part of the group
of ancient universities of UK and Ireland. Also it is
part of the elite group “Russell” of the 20 best UK
universities.

Structure of University
• University contains 38 colleges and
6 dormitories – they are closed
educational institutions, that
belongs to religious orders
without a college status. Exams,
most lectures and practical
exercises are organized centrally.

• There are more than 20 thousand students in
Oxford, quarter of them are foreigners.
Amount of students increases in summer,
when summer language schools are open.
Before the 1920’s women could not enter the

The teacher’s staff is huge – more than 4
thousand teachers, 70 of the are members of
Royal society, more than 100 – members of
British Academy. University of Oxford uses
unique system of tutoring – each student got
his personal specialist in the chosen
specialty.

• University of Oxford is not only a university,
but it is also biggest scientific-research
center. Oxford got more than 100
libraries(the largest university library in
England), museums and publishing house.
Students have opportunity to devote a lot of
time for recreation. There are more than 300
interests groups. Oxford pay close attention
to sports as a prestigious form of rest.

• Main directions of preparing
students – humanitarian,
mathematic, physics, social science,
medicine, the science about life and
environment. Famous graduate
students are Stephen Hawking,
Dorothy Hodgkin, Oscar Wilde, John
Locke and etc.
