is defined by its compliance with the modern learnercentered and communicative approaches to teaching
English as a foreign language and the
anthropocentric paradigm of modern science in
general

Thesis’ aims
- to explore the effectiveness of the functional
approach to teaching grammar
- to define the beneficial ways of using it in the
English language classroom in secondary school.

Research objectives:
to study the foundations, benefits and challenges of
functional approach to teaching grammar;
to analyze the functional approach in its respect to
learners' communicative skills development and
motivation;
to model the functional clusters for meaningful
grammar acquisition and use and to develop a set of
tasks and exercises within the functional approach to
teaching grammar in the EFL classroom;
to conduct an experiment and a survey for testing and
verification of the developed teaching materials

The object of the research
is teaching grammar in the English language
classroom
The subject of the study
is the use of a functional approach in teaching
grammar in the English language classroom.

The scientific novelty
lies in the attempt to systematize the knowledge of
functional approach to teaching grammar in the EFL
classroom and to apply this knowledge in the
development of teaching materials aimed to improve
learners’ communicative skills and grammar literacy
bridging the gap between grammar and real-world
language use, helping students develop their
language skills in a more authentic and practical
manner

The hypothesis of the research
is that the implementation of the functional
approach to teaching grammar in the English
language classroom will lead to increased student
engagement and efficient acquisition of grammar
knowledge, as compared to a traditional deductive
approach.

The theoretical and methodological
basis of the research is grounded in:
functional grammar
functional linguistics
communicative language teaching
learner-centered approach
and constructivist theories of learning

Michael Halliday - made a significant contribution
to the development of functional linguistics and
functional grammar.
Noam Chomsky - although he is more associated
with generative grammar, his ideas about the
structure of language and the theory of syntax also
influenced constructivist trends in linguistics.
Gerald Bach - A researcher in the field of
communicative language teaching, who has
contributed to the teaching methodology with an
emphasis on real communicative situations.
