The Ofenes
developed a
special
conditional
language (fenya)
to communicate
with each other,
the Ofenes
themselves called
themselves masks
and guards.

Ofenes were mainly called only those
street peddlers who came from the
peasants of the Vladimir province. In
the more western provinces of Russia,
another name was common —
peddlers.

According to one version, the
history of the Ophenes began in
the XV century, when a
significant number of Greeks
from the Ottoman Empire
moved to Russia.

On the other hand, Ofeni
are the successors of the
traditions of buffoons.
Most of them took up
trading.

A century later,
traveling merchants
began to consider
themselves a separate
secret society in Russia;
from traveling buffoons,
merchants and artisans,
they adopted the way of
life, and from pilgrims
— book wisdom and
Greek words.

For about two
and a half
centuries, Athens
maintained its
way of life and
spoke a secret
professional
language called
fenya.
Starting from the
19th century,
linguists began
to explore the
language of
"Ofenei".

There were also Turkic
loanwords, Polish, and
Mari in the Ofene
language. Very often,
ofeni attached
understandable Russian
prefixes and suffixes to
the borrowed word.
It received a new and at
the same time familiar
meaning, and at the
same time it was
incomprehensible to the
uninitiated.
