Scotland is a country in the north of the island of Great Britain, which is part of the
state of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It borders England by land
and is washed by the Atlantic Ocean seas: the Northern (in the east) and the Irish (in the west).
The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh, and the largest city is Glasgow.
The population is 5.3 million people. The area is 78,722 km2. The languages are
English, Gaelic and Scottish. The currency is the pound sterling.

Scotland is one of the most beautiful places in Britain, which is famous for its
magnificent dramatic landscapes of rugged mountains and green valleys, picturesque hills,
fields, forests and rugged coastline. Here, history surrounds almost everywhere, revealing the
veils of secrets of legendary battles, romantic ruins and old stone churches. Scotland is a
country of amazing diversity, where you can find almost a complete set of tourist attractions:
beautiful medieval cities, fabulous castles and beautiful natural landscapes.

Attractions
Edinburgh Castle is one of the symbols of Scotland. The stone towers and walls of
this structure have dominated Edinburgh since the 13th century. The castle is built on a
picturesque basalt rock, preserves stunning historical artifacts and offers breathtaking views
of the capital of Scotland. Below the castle runs the famous Royal Mile, a historic street with
many old brick buildings and attractions.
Loch Ness is one of the most beautiful and mysterious places in Scotland. This
deep lake is famous all over the world for stories about Nessie (the Loch Ness monster). The
ruins of a 12th-century castle on the shore are the center of local legends and stories. The
castle fell victim to a fire five centuries after its foundation.
Glenfinnan is an arched railway viaduct. This amazing engineering structure has
become widely known thanks to the Harry Potter film series.

The most popular souvenirs are whiskey (scotch) and kilt. An item that is always
associated only with Scotland is a kilt. Scottish men wear a special piece of clothing, a piece
of cloth wrapped around their hips, roughly speaking, a skirt. The kilt has been used here
since the end of the XVI century and is still popular.
Famous Scottish inventors include John Loughie Baird, who invented television in
1925, Alexander Graham Bell, who invented the telephone in 1876, and Alexander Fleming,
who invented penicillin in 1928.
Arthur Conan Doyle (May 22, 1859 — July 7, 1930) was an English writer of
Irish descent, the author of numerous adventure, historical, fantasy and humorous works. The
creator of the brilliant detective Sherlock Holmes.
Sean Connery (real name Thomas Sean Connery) is a British actor and film
producer. He is best known as the first actor to play the British secret agent James Bond in a
movie. He was born in Edinburgh.
