2. THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND

is situated on the islands in the northwest of
Europe. The population of the UK is about 60
million . The UK is a highly developed country.
The UK has four parts: England, Scotland,
Wales and Northern Ireland.
Great Britain consists of England, Scotland, Wales.
The capital of the UK is London. It’s main cities
are London, Birmingham, Manchester and
Glasgow.
The UK of Great Britain is one of the smallest
countries in the world – It’s twice smaller that
France or Spain . There are only nine other
countries with more people. Most people are
British. You can meet here people of many
different nationalities. Official language is
English.
Britain is an unusually beautiful country! In Great
Britain one can find any type of scenery.
We want to take you on an exciting journey through
the whole country. We’ll begin our journey with
London. It’s the seventh biggest city in the
world.

3. London – the Capital of the UK

London is the capital of Great Britain. It’s a very old
city. It is two thousand years old. London is not
only the capital of the country, it is also a huge
port. The population of London is about 9
million people. London has got three parts: the
City of London, the West End, The East End.
The City of London is the financial center of the U K.
The West End is the center of London. The East
End of London is the district for the working
people.
In London you can see many sights: Westminster
Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square,
museums, libraries and galleries.
The City is the money of London.
The West End is the goods of London.
The East End is the hands of London.

5. Places of Interest in London

There are lots of places to visit in London.
Tourists in London always want to visit
Westminster and see Big Ben. Big Ben is
really a bell. It is interesting that the clock
“Big Ben” came into service in 1859. You
hear it every hour. It weighs 13,720
kilograms. It has a deep tone and you can
hear it on the radio:
“ This is six o’clock”. And then you hear
the deep boom of Big Ben six times.

6. The Tower of London

Tower of London is very old. You can see
it from the river Thames. It has a long
and cruel history.
It is not just one building. The tall
building is the White Tower, the oldest
part of the Tower of London. The
bloody Tower is near the river. You do
not see blood there today. But the
bloody Tower has a history of blood –
the blood of men, women and even
children.

7. Westminster Abbey

The other interesting place is
Westminster Abbey, which was
founded in 1050. It is situated in
the center of London. Many great
Englishmen were buried in the
Abbey: Newton, Darvin and
others. Westminster Abbey is a
symbol of England. Westminster
Abbey was built by king Edward
in 1065. The coronation of all
British kings and queens takes
place in Westminster Abbey.

8. The Houses of Parliament

stand beside the river
Thames. The country’s
leaders speak in the
Houses of Parliament.
The men and women
there are the voice of the
British people. You can
go on a boat from
Westminster and see
London from the river.
You can also see Big Ben
and the Houses of
Parliament from
Westminster Bridge.

9. Buckingham Palace

This is Buckingham Palace the place where British
kings and queens live
when they are in London.
It was built in the 18th
century. A lot of tourists
go to Buckingham
Palace. Important visitors
often go to the palace.

10. Trafalgar Square

There are many nice
squares in London.
Trafalgar Square is
one of them and it is
in the center of the
West End. One can
see a statue of Lord
Nelson in the middle
of this square.

11. You are welcome to our country

London is very rich in parks and
gardens. London’s parks are full of
trees, grass, flowers and water. You
can walk among old trees, relax and
admire flowers and plants or take
part in the many activities such as
tennis, swimming and horse – riding.
The Royal Parks are the property
of the Royal family. In central London
they include Hyde Park,
Green Park, St. James’s Park, Regent’s
Park and Kensington Gardens.
