The first chain saw was patented in New Yorkin 1858, but it was not until the 1920’s that
chain saws as we know them today began to
appear.
This is a WOLF electric machine introduced
in 1920. As can be seen from the inset the
chain used at this time was a ‘scratcher’ type2.

The early saws were very heavy, difficult to handle and somewhat unreliable.Diaphragm carburetors were not available at this time and the guide bar had to be
rotated to keep the fuel tank above the carburetor.3.

These “scratcher” chains were very inefficient, did not clear chips, had poor staysharp and were difficult to sharpen5.

Joe realised if he could duplicate the larva’s alternating C-shaped jaws in steel, itjust might work. He went to work in the basement of his Portland OREGON®
home and came up with a revolutionary new saw chain.
