Vacuum Cleaner
The work was done by
students of BBBO-1725: Artyom Knyazkov
and Andrey Galakhov

Dust in the 19th Century
Dirty Homes: In the 1800s, homes were
heated by coal and oil lamps, creating lots of
dust and soot.
Old Methods: People cleaned carpets by
taking them outside and beating them with a
stick. This was hard work and very dusty.
Need for Change: People needed a cleaner
and easier way to clean their homes.

The First Real Inventor: Hubert Booth (1901)
The "Puffing Billy": British engineer Hubert Booth
invented the first powered vacuum cleaner.
How it worked: It was a large, gasoline-powered
machine. It didn't blow air — it sucked air through a
filter.
Fun Fact: It was so big it had to be pulled by horses
and parked outside. Hoses were brought through the
windows.

The First Portable Model: Spangler & Hoover
(1908)
James Spangler: A janitor in the USA. He was
allergic to dust, so he invented a small electric
vacuum cleaner using a fan, a pillowcase, and a
broom handle.
William Hoover: Spangler sold his patent to his
cousin, William Hoover.
Mass Production: Hoover started a company and
made the vacuum cleaner popular all over the
world. That's why in many countries, people still
call it a "Hoover".

How It Changed the World
Cleaner Air: Vacuum cleaners trap dust
and allergens, making air healthier.
Saves Time: Cleaning became much
faster than beating carpets by hand.
New Jobs: It created new industries and
manufacturing jobs.
Women's Work: It made housework easier
for millions of women.

From Then to Now
The invention of the vacuum cleaner has come a long way. It started as a huge
machine pulled by horses, and only rich people could use it. Today, we have many
different types - from powerful upright vacuums to small handheld devices. This
shows how technology can make our daily life easier and more convenient.
But the most exciting part is the future. Now we have smart robots that clean our
homes while we are at job or sleeping. They can even be controlled by our phones.
So, the vacuum cleaner is not just a tool anymore - it's part of our smart home. And
it all began with a simple idea more than 100 years ago.
