The 2014 Winter
Olympics, officially
called the XXII Olympic
Winter Games, were an
international winter
multi-sport event that
was held from 7 to 23
February 2014 in Sochi,
Russia. Opening rounds
in certain events were
held on 6 February
2014, the day before
the opening ceremony.
On 29 September 2013, the
Olympic torch was lit in Ancient
Olympia, beginning a seven-day
journey across Greece and on
to Russia. The torch relay
started in Moscow on 7
October 2013 and passed
through 83 Russian cities
before arriving in Sochi on the
day of the opening ceremony.
This was the longest torch relay
in Olympic history, covering a
60,000-kilometre route that
passed through all regions of
the country, from Kaliningrad
to Chukotka
The opening ceremony of the
2014 Winter Olympics was
held at the Fisht Olympic
Stadium in Sochi, Russia, on 7
February 2014. It started at
20:14 MSK and ended at 23:02
MSK. The ceremony was
broadcast by the Olympic
Broadcasting Services (OBS)
and Russian channels Channel
One and VGTRK. Notably, it
was the second Winter
Olympics opening ceremony to
take place in an indoor
stadium.
A record 88 nations qualified
to compete in the 2014 Winter
Olympics, surpassing the
previous record of 82 set at
the Vancouver games. Seven
nations made their Winter
Olympics debut: Dominica,
Malta, Paraguay, Timor-Leste,
Togo, Tonga, and Zimbabwe.
Notably, Malta's debut meant
that for the first time ever, all
current members of the
European Olympic Committees
participated in the Winter
Olympics.

nationwide design contest
and a public vote via text
message during a live TV
broadcast. The selected

Leopard, the Polar Bear, and
the Hare—represented
