London is the capital of Great Britain, its
political, economic and cultural centre. It's
one of the largest cities in the world. Its
population is more than million people.
London is situated on the river Thames.
Traditionally London is divided into several
parts: the City, the West End, the East End
and Westminster.

The big clock on the
tower of the Palace
of Westminster in
London is often
called Big Ben. But
Big Ben is really the
bell of the clock. It is
the biggest clock bell
in Britain. It weighs
13.5 tons.
The clock tower is
318 feet high.

The Thames is the most popular and the most
important river. It is suitable for navigation.
Large ships can get up to London Bridge
which is 50 miles away from the sea.

St. Paul's Cathedral was
the greatest work of Sir
Christopher Wren. It is
one of the largest
churches in the world.
Sir Wren was building
the Cathedral for 35
years, completed it in
1711, and his aim was
to build a church that
could rival the great St.
Peter Basilica in Rome.

Trafalgar Square, set in
central London, is one of
Britain's great tourist
attractions. A visit to the
capital would be incomplete
without going to marvel at
Nelsons Column and the
four giant lions at its base,
or to admire the lovely
splashing fountains.
The National Gallery
occupies the north side of
the square.

Westminster Abbey.
According to the ancient
tradition all English kings
and queens were crowned
and wed here.
Westminster Abbey is the
place where many
outstanding Englishmen are
buried, among them wellknown poets, writers,
scientists .

Piccadilly Circus is the
centre of night life in
the West End. This is
one of the most
popular meeting points
of London. Groups of
people like to gather
around the foot of the
statue of Eros, the god
of love, work of Sir
Alfred Gilbert.
