the first in the world.

residents of the country
speak Russian. Russia is a
multinational country, with

nationalities living in it.
People practice different
religions.

National Unity Day in Russia is celebrated on
November 4.

This date is associated
with the liberation of
Moscow by the forces
of the national militia
under the leadership of
Kuzma Minin and
Dmitry Pozharsky from
the Polish invaders in
1612.

The memory of the heroes of the militia is perpetuated in Nizhny
Novgorod. The streets and the central square of the city are
named after them. Minin and Pozharsky Squares have become
the site of major city celebrations and spectacular events.

In 1818, a sculptural monument depicting the
heroes was erected in Moscow. The inscription
on the monument reads: "Grateful Russia to
Citizen Minin and Prince Pozharsky."
