4. Fact 1

Kazan Aviation Institute was founded on March 5,
1932.
That means, our University is 92 years old!
(Our university is almost as old as fashion designer Valentino and
Hollywood movie star Elizabeth Taylor, who were all born in 1932)
The same year, 1932, Amelia Earhart made her first solo trans-Atlantic
flight. The era of airplanes has started in earnest

2 buildings of KNRTU-KAI are located in Chetayev Street.
Have you ever wondered who Chetayev is?
Nikolay Gurievich Chetayev founded the 1st Scientific
School of General Mechanics at KAI in 1932-1940.
Later he became an academician of Russian Academy of Science and
worked in Moscow.

In 1973 KAI was named after Andrey Nikolayevich
Tupolev, a prominent aircraft designer.
Although he never actually worked at KAI, his contribution
to aircraft construction industry was simply amazing.
He designed over 100 airplanes, 70 of which were massproduced. The airplanes which he constructed set 78
world records.
His TU-144 airplane has been named ‘the most elegant
airplane of all times’

7. Fact 4

• In 1945 KAI founded the first Department of Jet Engines, headed
by Academician Valentin Petrovich Glushko, founder of rocket
engine manufacturing in Russia.
• Among the first teachers of the Department was Sergey Pavlovich
Korolyov, who later on became a chief aircraft designer of Russia.
• Kazan is proud of having two streets bearing the names of these
outstanding scientists.

• In 2009 KAI received the status of National
Research University
