3.

General overview
The Bolshoi
Theatre
is
super famous
— not just in
Russia, but
all over the
world.

4.

Original name and location
It all started on
March 28, 1776,
when Prince
Pyotr Urusov
got the green
light from
Empress
Catherine II to
put on shows

5.

Original name and location
Back then, it was
called the
Petrovsky Theatre
because it was on
Petrovka Street.

6.

Key construction and restoration stages
The building actually burned down
twice, but it always came back bigger
and better.

7.

Current building inauguration
The theatre we see today
was built by architect
Albert Cavos and opened
in 1856 with Bellini’s
opera I Puritani.

8.

Facade features
You can’t miss the cool quadriga of Apollo on the façade — that’s the work of sculptor
Pyotr Klodt.

9.

Auditorium description
Inside, the auditorium seats
1,740 people and looks
super fancy, with gold details
and red drapes in
Renaissance style.
There’s also this massive
eight-metre chandelier with
13,000 crystal bits — it’s
pretty stunning.
Between 2005 and 2011,
they did a huge renovation to
bring back the original look
and fix the acoustics.

10.

Modern venues and repertoire
Nowadays, the
Bolshoi isn’t just the
old stage — it’s got
modern spaces too,
like the New Stage
and the Chamber
Stage (that’s named
after
B. A. Pokrovsky).
Their shows are
top-notch — you’ll
find world-class
operas and ballets
that always draw a
crowd.
