Vitus Jonassen Bering was a Danish and Russian
navigator, and a captain-commander of the Russian
Navy (1730).
From the age of 14, he served as a cabin boy in
the Danish Navy and sailed to the Indian Ocean
twice.

Expeditions
By decree of Peter I, he was appointed head of the
First Kamchatka Expedition (1725–1730). The official
goal was to determine whether there was an
isthmus or a strait between Asia and America.
•On July 17, 1741, Bering reached the
coast of North America near the St.
Elias Mountains at a latitude of 58°14′.

Memory
The island, strait, and sea in the northern Pacific
Ocean, as well as the Commander Islands, are
named after Bering.
There are monuments to Bering in many cities.

A cartographic survey of 3,500 km of the Bering
Sea coastline has been completed.
The strait between Asia and North America was
discovered and explored, and it was later
named after Bering (the Bering Strait).
