2. What is a drought?
■ Drought is when it does not rain for a long time, and the groundbecomes dry. It can go on for months or even years. Due to drought,
plants lack water and can dry out. In recent years, droughts have
become stronger due to the fact that the climate is changing and people
are affecting nature.
3. Here's why the drought is getting worse:
Here's why the drought is getting worse:■ 1. the ground is warming. When the
planet gets hotter, the water
disappears faster. Even if it rains,
the water does not have time to
absorb into the ground.
■ 2.The weather is changing. Due to
the fact that the winds and currents
in the oceans are shifting, dry and
hot weather from some places
comes to others.

■ 3. Rains are uneven. Either there areheavy rains, then they are gone for a
long time. Because of this, the earth
cannot retain moisture.
■ 4. Deforestation and improper
farming. If forests are cut down and
land is poorly cultivated, it loses its
ability to retain water. Without trees,
the ground quickly dries up.
■ 5. People use more water With
population growth and industrial
development, people are using more
fresh water. When drought sets in,
there is less water.
5. Drought affects some countries the most:
■Southern Europe. Spain, Italy, Greece
and southern France are often hot
and have little rain. Because of this,
the harvest becomes smaller, there is
not enough water, and forest fires
often occur.
■ North and East Africa. In the regions,
Somalia and Sudan also often lack
water. This causes hunger, people are
forced to move elsewhere, and
conflicts can arise. Drought in these
countries can last for years.

■In 1972, summer was very hot in
Russia, and not a drop of rain fell in
some areas of Central Russia.
Winter was light and cold, and the
soil could not accumulate enough
moisture. Because of the heat, fires
began, which destroyed a lot of
forest. The drought covered the
entire Volga region, the south and
part of northwestern Russia. In
Moscow, there was a strong smog
from fires for a whole month.
■ • In 2011, about 10 million people
in Africa were affected by severe
drought. This was caused by
changes in ocean water
temperature that affect weather
worldwide.
7. Drought varies:
■ • Drought in the fields. This is whencrops of grain, corn or other plants
do not have time to grow due to lack
of water.
■ • Water drought. This is when rivers
dry up, reservoirs become shallow,
and there is not enough water for
cities and towns.
