What is silk? How is it produced?
Silk is a natural fiber produced by silkworms. It is made from the cocoons spun by the larvae of
the silk moth.The cocoons are immersed in hot water to make the silk fibres easier to unwind.
The fibers from several cocoons are carefully unwound and combined to form a single silk thread.
Once the silk threads have been extracted, they are twisted to form the silk thread. The thread is
dyed and prepared for weaving.

The Legend of Silk Discovery
According to Chinese legend, Empress Leizu (also known as Hsi Ling Shi) discovered silk around
2640 B.C.E. when a silkworm cocoon fell from a mulberry tree into her hot tea. As the cocoon
softened, she found it was a single, long, shimmering thread, leading her to invent the loom and
establish sericulture (silk farming).

■ The earliest silk fabric discovered dates from 3,630 BC in Henan
■ China kept silk production secret for over 3,000 years

What is the Silk Road?
Network of trade routes connecting China and the Far East with the Middle East and Europe. Active
from the 2nd century BCE until the mid-15th century. Spanned over 6,400 km (4,000 miles) on land.
Named after Chinese silk, the most valuable trade item.
