Understanding Chapter 7Explanation
Read all of Chapter 7 from page 119 to page 135.
You need a copy of the ‘Lord of the Flies’ for this lesson. Please ensure
that you are using the Faber & Faber; Main edition (3 Mar. 1997).
As you read, focus on the character of Ralph.
Think about:
● how he was at the beginning of the novel
● the things he does in this chapter

Understanding Chapter 7Check
Below are the events at the end of Chapter 7, but they are in the
wrong order. What is the right order?
The rest of the boys start a new hunt for
pigs. Ralph joins in.
Ralph looks out over the sea. Simon
predicts that Ralph will make it home.
Ralph, Jack and Roger climb the
mountain and “see” the beast.
Ralph has a vivid memory of one of
his old homes.

Feedback
This is what Izzy said:
● cruel
● brave
● thoughtful
● bloodthirsty
● savage
Izzy
The change in Ralph is terrifying.
Until now, he was civilised and
reasonable. Seeing him becoming
savage makes the island seem
even more dangerous as if cruelty
and violence are inevitable.
● optimistic
● authoritative
● violent
Were your ideas similar or different to Izzy’s?

13.
Golding’s use of a flashbackExplanation
Here is the list again:
his father
two navy bases
his mother
ponies
snow
food
books
Discuss: think about each of them. What do they tell us about Ralph?
Why do you think Golding included these details?
14.
Golding’s use of a flashbackExplanation
This is what the Oak pupils said:
Izzy
Ralph recalls a time when he was living with both parents
at a naval base in the English countryside. There is a
particularly vivid memory of ponies and snow. It seems
like a happy time before he was sent to boarding school.
He also remembers eating cereal for supper and the
books he read. The books are “dog-eared” which shows
that he has read them often. He likes books about trains
and ships and one of the books really frightened him.

15.
Golding’s use of a flashbackCheck
Match the quotation from the flashback to their connotations.
“cornflakes”
family, childhood and a feeling of safety
the world of imagination and fictional adventures
“Mummy”
familiar food served at regular times suggesting
order
“Devenport”
a reminder of the existence and presence of war
“books”
16.
Task BGolding’s use of a flashback
Practice
Now, let’s look at where the flashback appears in Chapter 7.
Present: Ralph
looks at the
sea. He notices
how dirty he is.
Flashback:
Ralph recalls a
key memory
from his past.
Present: Raph
joins the other
boys in a mock
pig hunt.
Present: Ralph,
Jack and
Roger set off to
look for the
beast.
Discuss: what is the effect of the flashback? Think about:
● How does the flashback link to and contrast with the event before?
● How does the flashback link to and contrast with the events after?

Feedback
Compare
ideas
with
theirs.
Here areyour
some
of the
ideas
discussed by the Oak pupils.
Ralph’s observation of his
neglected physical state
contrasts with his memories
of being cared for.
Aisha
Izzy
The peaceful memories
contrast with the violent
mock pig hunt and the
search for the beast.
His previous life obviously felt more
secure than life on the island; his
mother and father were both present.
So he lived like the child he actually is.
The link I see is that Ralph has
lived in many different houses,
moving between navy bases.
And his mother is missing. How
secure was that life really?
