Use:
• Action in progress at a stated time in the past
(действия в процессе, в опред.время в прошлом)
At 5 o’clock yesterday I was watching the film.
• Past action in progress interrupted by another
past action (одно действие в прошлом – длинноепрерывается другим действие - коротким) Longer
action-> Past Continuous, shorter action -> Past
Simple.
She was ironing when the doorbell rang.

2. Past continuous

Use:
• Simultaneous actions (параллельные действия)
I was doing homework while my mum was cooking
dinner.
• Background information in a story (описание
фона в повествовании )
The rain was pouring and the wind was blowing.
Sam was returning home from a long trip.
