"Magnus's Effect"

What is "Magnus effect"
As it is clear according to his name, this effect was
opened by Heinrich Magnus in 1853 what he has
received nothing for, but the phenomenon quite
interesting.
If to speak science language, then this physical
phenomenon arising at flow of the rotating body with a
stream of liquid or gas.

What is "Magnus effect"
The essence of the phenomenon is that the ball at
rotation creates around itself air whirl. On the one hand
an object the direction of a whirlwind coincides with the
direction of the flowing round stream and the speed of
the movement of the environment from this party
increases. On the other side of an object the direction of
a whirlwind to an opposite direction of the movement of a
stream, and speed of the movement of the environment
decreases. This difference of speeds generates the cross
force which changes a flight trajectory.

Magnus's effect is used in:
Sport
Wind generators
Shipbuilding
Aircraft industry

"Magnus effect" in sport
The essence of the
phenomenon is that the
ball at rotation creates
around itself a vortex
motion of air. On the one
hand an object the
direction of a whirlwind
coincides with the
direction of the flowing
round stream and
traveling speed of the
environment from this
party increases.

On the other side of an
object the direction of a
whirlwind to an opposite
direction of driving of a
stream, and traveling
speed of the
environment decreases.
This difference of speeds
generates the
transversal force which
changes a flight
trajectory

Widely now in use
bladed wind generators
in the world unstably and
unefficiently work at
small speeds of wind.
Therefore the wind
turbines using Magnus's
effect which main
advantages are shown at
the low, but the most
often repeating speeds
of wind of 2-6 m/s are
very interesting.

"Magnus effect" in shipbuilding
Rotor ships use mastlike cylinders for
propulsion. The effect
is used in a special
type of ship stabilizer
consisting of a
rotating cylinder
mounted beneath the
waterline and
emerging laterally.

"Magnus effect" in shipbuilding
By controlling the
direction and speed
of rotation, strong lift
or downforce can be
generated. The
largest deployment of
the system to date is
in the motor yacht
Eclipse.

"Magnus effect" in aircraft
A flettner airplane is a
type of rotor airplane
which uses a Flettner
rotor to provide lift. The
rotor comprises a
spinning cylinder with
circular end plates and,
in an aircraft, spins about
a spanwise horizontal
axis. When the aircraft
moves forward the
Magnus effect creates
lift.
