South Precambrian platform

1. South Precambrian platform

BY OLEKSANDER PROKOPENKO

2.

3. South American Platform

o
Stable continental crust of S. America not affected by Cenozoic
tectonics and orogenies
Basically everything east of the Andes and south of the Caribbean
o
Consists of Archean and older Proterozoic nuclei surrounded by
younger Proterozoic orogenic belts
o
Exposed in 4 places:
Guyana Shield
Guaporé Shield
Sao Francisco Craton
Rio de la Plata Craton

6. Guyana shield

Location : It underlies the three Guianas-Guyana, Surinam and
French Guiana- and parts of Venezuela, Columbia and Brazil.
Archean: three comparatively small Archean nuclei
The tectonically overthrust Imataca Complex in the north
The poorly defined Pakairama Craton in the centre – west
The Xingu Craton(northern segment) in the southeast
Early Proterozoic: rocks consisting of the metavolcanic Pastora
Supergroup and the granitic plutonic Supamo Complex. (2.2-1.8Ga)
Mind Proterozoic: rocks consists of continental clastic sedimentary
rocks. These Precambrian sediments include quartz sandstones,
quartzites, and conglomerates presumed (1.7-1.4Ga).

10. Platform magmatism

In Amazon, Parnaiba, San Francisco, Paraná,
Chaco Basin , powerful strata of plateaubasalts and interplanetary intrusions of the
main composition and other breeds of the
formation of the Jurassic-Cretaceous
formation were discovered. This formation is
especially developed in the Paraná Basin,
where the Serra-Gerral series depth to 1.8 km
