How do we celebrate it?

We celebrate it by
gathering around a
famous groundhog
hole in
Punxsutawney,
called Gobbler’s
knob, Pennsylvania.
The name of the
groundhog is Phil
and he tells us when
spring will come.

2. Who are the people on the top hats?

They are known as
the inner circle. Only
the president of the
inner circle talks with
Phil. They are the
ones who are not
only responsible for
planning the events
every year, but
they're also
responsible for the
feeding and care of
Phil himself!

3. How does he forecast the weather?

If Phil sees his shadow ,
it means six more
weeks of winter.
If he does not see his
shadow, it means spring
is just round the corner.
Approximately 90% of
the time, Phil sees his
shadow.
Phil has predicted the
weather for about 120
years.
He has become an
American Institution.

4. Fun fact

Groundhogs are
diggers: They build a
burrow with a main
entrance and an escape
tunnel.
Ground hogs are
members of the squirrel
family. They have small
buck teeth.
Ground hogs are called
woodchucks or marmots,
too.
They eat low green
vegetation.
They live on land, but
are good swimmers and
climbers.
