The European Day of
Languages

celebrating linguistic diversity, plurilingualism
and lifelong language learning

Origins
The European Day of Languages was first celebrated during
the first European Year of Languages, 2001:
45 countries celebrated linguistic diversity and the ablility to
speak another language.
At the end of the Year, the Committee of Ministers of the
Council of Europe declared a European Day of Languages
to be celebrated on the 26th September each year.

The objectives of the
European Day of Languages
•To draw people’s attention to the importance of language
learning
• To encourage people to learn more languages in order
to increase plurilingualism and intercultural
understanding;
•To promote the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of
Europe;
•To encourage lifelong language learning in and out of
school.

EDL 2015 at the Moravská Trebová school, Czech Republic.
Our school had participated in an eTwinning project 'Postcards for the EDL' with 40 other
schools from all over Europe. On September, 25th we had the postcards in different languages on
display, we prepared a quiz for the pupils, they wandered through the school looking for the
