3. There were too many dangers for Yossarian to
keep track of. There was Hitler, Mussolini and
Tojo, for example, and they were all out to kill him.
4. At the end of ten days, a new group of doctors
came to Yossarian with bad news: he was in
perfect health and had to get out of the hospital.

25. Brainstorm. “Secret weapon”

Learn to cope with stressful conditions – be sure you possess
all the techniques of simultaneous interpretation.
1. Use sign method of translation. Translate by phrases.
From sign in one language to sign in the other one. Calque. Full
translation. Word for word translation. Not desirable – can
have ugly forms. Can be handy.
2. Anticipate!
Think about possible continuation and be ready with the
next possible phrases.
3. Create/organize/practise SEMANTIC FIELD.
An experienced interpreter is able to juggle preprepared
phrases and collocations on a certain topic.
4. Practise!

26. Practise! How?

Delivery
Repeatedly interpret the same speech until you arrive at a
satisfactory version.
Work out “sign reflex”
Write out the necessary phrases and record them randomly and in
both languages. Listen and interpret. Reduce the pauses.
Shadowing
is the repetition of a speech in the same language a couple of
seconds after the speaker.
Decalage
is the time difference between what the speaker says and its
reproduction by the interpreter in the target language.
Split attention
Speaking and listening at the same time is not natural and can detract
from other cognitive activities, it is therefore worthy of practice.
