1. INTRODUCTION
Irish English / Hiberno-English vs. Irish Gaelic:
Irish Gaelic is a language originating in Ireland, historically
spoken by the Irish people. It‘s now spoken as a first
language by a minority of Irish people.
The term Irish Gaelic is often used when English speakers
discuss the relationship among the three Gaelic languages –
Irish Gaelic, Scottish Gaelic and Manx.
Irish English or Hiberno-English (Latin: Hibernia - Ireland)
is the form of English written and widely spoken in Ireland.

4.

HISTORY OF ENGLISH
English was first brought to
Ireland as a result of the
Norman invasion of the late
12th century, although during
that time the Normans did not
speak English, but rather
Norman-French.
By the mid-19th century, English
was the majority language
spoken in the country.
Modern English spoken in Ireland
today retains some features
showing the influence of the Irish
language, such as vocabulary,
grammatical structures and
pronunciation.
