liveinthehumanlymphsystem.Thelymph

Lymphaticfilariasisaffectsover120million
peoplein72countriesthroughoutthe
tropicsandsub-tropicsofAsia,Africa,the
WesternPacific,andpartsoftheCaribbean
andSouthAmerica.Youcannotget
infectedwiththewormsintheUnited
States.

south-eastAsia,inthePacificislands
andinsmallerfociinSouthAmerica.

SymptomsMostcasesaresymptomless.Rarely,
long-termdamagetothelymphsystem
causesswellinginthelegs,arms,and
genitalia.Italsoincreasestheriskof
frequentbacterialinfectionsthatharden
andthickentheskin(elephantiasis).

DiagnosisThestandardmethodfordiagnosing
activeinfectionistheidentificationof
microfilariaeinabloodsmearby
microscopicexamination.The
microfilariaethatcauselymphatic
filariasiscirculateinthebloodatnight
(callednocturnalperiodicity).
PreventionAvoidingmosquitobitesisthebestformof
prevention.

DiagnosisLaboratorydiagnosisofJEisgenerally
accomplishedbytestingofserumor
cerebrospinalfluid(CSF)todetectvirusspecificIgMantibodies.JEvirusIgM
antibodiesareusuallydetectable3to8
daysafteronsetofillnessandpersist
for30to90days,butlongerpersistence
hasbeendocumented.

PreventionandcontrolThemosteffectivewaytopreventinfection
fromJapaneseEncephalitisvirusistoprevent
mosquitobites.Mosquitoesbiteduringtheday
andnight.Useinsectrepellent,wearlongsleevedshirtsandpants,treatclothingandgear,
andgetvaccinatedbeforetraveling,if
vaccinationisrecommendedforyou.

TreatmentNospecifictreatmentshavebeenfoundto
benefitpatientswithJE,buthospitalization
forsupportivecareandcloseobservationis
generallyrequired.
Treatmentissymptomatic.Rest,fluids,and
useofpainrelieversandmedicationto
reducefevermayrelievesomesymptoms.
