Foundation of Beirut
Beirut is the capital of Lebanon, and has an
interesting history about it. For a long time, the
city has been thought of as both the gateway to
the East and the crossroads between Africa, Asia
and Europe due to its location. The city was
originally named Beroth (meaning the city of
wells) by the Phoenicians, but was seemingly
unimportant when compared to the successful
Byblos, Sidon and Tyre.
According to relics from prehistoric communities,
Beirut is possibly one of man’s oldest settlements.
Habitation was traced in Beirut since the Stone
Age, where the area of the city was two islands
forming the delta of the Beirut River. Once the
river silted up, the area became the land mass of
Beirut. Some of the earliest records of habitation
in Beirut date back to 1900 B.C., where there was
thought to be a Canaanite site.

Development of Beirut
Education played a major role in giving Beirut
more fame, as its School of Law was better than
the Schools of Constantinople and Athens and
was on the same level as that of Rome. Beirut
began developing its own commercial and
military side. Large public buildings and
monuments were built, combined with a series of
baths, a number of markets and theaters many of
these are still available in modern-day Beirut. The
Ottomans took over for four centuries until 1918.
Because the Ottoman rule is based mainly on
economics, the local tax farmers gained the most
power this rule allowed Beirut to become more
and more important even today Beirut is still
developing at all professional levels, laws,
educational systems and many other fields. In
addition to that lebanons free trade policies and
geographical position helped a lot in development
of the city.
