BRITISH MUSEUM

The British Museum was opened to the public in 1759. There
are departments of Medieval Antiquities, Asiatic Antiquities,
Prehistoric and Roman- British Antiquities and the Department
of Asia. The museum also represents personal collection of Sir
Hans Sloane, who was a physician and naturalist. He had a
collection which consisted of a library ( books, manuscripts,
prints, drawings), herbarium, coins and medals.
The building of the museum has a quadrangular form and
was designed in the 19-th century especially for the museum
by Sir Kobert Smirke.
The total number of all museum’s items is around seven million.

VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM

The Victoria and Albert museum was established in 1852. The museum
has galleries for ceramics and glass, gold and silver ware, sculpture,
textiles, dress, furniture, as well as drawings, paintings, photographs. There
are also figures of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as well as busts and
figures of British artists whose works are represented at the museum.
At the museum’s main entrance there is a 9-meter high chandelier made
of glass. It welcomes its visitors and opens 145 galleries which hold over
four million items.

The metropolitan Museum of Art
(« The Met») was
established in 1872 and is called the treasury of human
civilization. Now it consists of nineteen departments. The
museum’s collection contains more than two million works of
art from all parts of the world, from ancient to modern times,
and represents major artistic movements. The Drawings and
Prints Department
contains drawings by Michelangelo,
Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrant.
The popular centerpiece of the Egyptian Art Department is
the Temple of Dendur- the large sandstone temple.
In 1910 the Met became the first museum to display the
paintings of Matisse.

NATIONAL AUTOMOBILE MUSEUM

The National Automobile Museum is devoted to automobile
history. It was opened in 1989. The basis for the museum was
the collection of Bill Harrah, the famous collector from
Nevada. There are some legendary cars, race cars, special
coupes, convertibles, cabriolets, minivans, pickup trucks. The
exhibitions also tell about many advances which were
achieved: dual- engine, multi- valve engine, four- wheel
breaks, transmissions and throttle control.
The building of the museum covers about one thousand
square feet and contains more than two hundred cars from
1892 to present.

POTATO MUSEUM

The potato museum was found in 1975 in Brussels, Belgium.
The founder, Tom Hughes, for many years closely studied the
history o potato. Later he moved to the USA and opened his
museum here. At the museum 12 different exhibits are held.
Interactive films are shown regularly. They are about the
history of potato and about many interesting facts. There are
also exhibits that show the best potato cookery.
There are many different varieties of the potato ( over five
thousand!). Potato can be of different shape and color.
Nowadays potato scientists from research centers from
different countries are involved in the process of collecting for
the museum.
