Serbia

The structure of education in
Serbia.
• In Serbia, there is a system of continuing
education, which can begin from the nursery
age. Moreover, it is possible to send the
child to a nursery as early as six months.
Compulsory pre-school training for children
aged 5-6 years is carried out in kindergarten
for at least six months before entering
primary school.

Children go to school at the age of 6-7 years. The first eight
years of study (the so-called basic school) are mandatory.
The first 4 years of these eight are occupied by primary
school, where all subjects except foreign language and
religious studies are taught by one teacher, and the entire
educational process takes place in the same classroom.
Starting from the 5th grade, subjects at school are taught by
different teachers.
After finishing the 8th grade, the student can choose to
continue or complete his education.The eighth-grade
"basic" education ends with the passing of a compulsory
exam, which consists of tests in mathematics, Serbian
language and a combined test in social and natural
sciences, including questions in biology, history, physics,
geography and chemistry.

Preschool education.
• Unlike neighboring Montenegro, where
children can attend a nursery from one
year old, in Serbia a child can be sent to
a preschool at the age of six months.
• After three years, children are
transferred to kindergartens, which are
of three types:
• public;
• private;
• kindergartens for children with
developmental disabilities.

• Kindergartens are paid, but the cost is calculated
differently in each city. So in the capital of the
country — Belgrade — parents pay for the
children's stay in full. The amount can be about
13,000 Serbian dinars (9,900 Russian rubles). In
other cities, the cost is calculated as a percentage
of the total price (for example, 20% in Novy-Sad)
or has a fixed amount. All other expenses in such
places are borne by the state. The last year
before school, all children go through a
mandatory preparatory program in
kindergartens, which lasts about nine months
and can take from 4 to 11 hours every weekday.
The duration depends on the form of preschool
and the choice of parents.

Primary education.
• When a child turns six or seven
years old, he goes to a public
school to receive primary
education. The duration of
training is eight years. It is
mandatory and free of charge for
all citizens of Serbia and foreigners
who have a residence permit in
the country. However, despite the
fact that primary school education
is free, parents are required to pay
for meals.
• Serbian primary education
consists of two stages:
• junior grades (grades 1 to 4);
• senior grades (grades 5 to 8).

• In high school, the curriculum is expanding, other
teachers are appearing. And at the end of the
eighth grade, all children pass the final exams and
receive a certificate. In addition to regular classes,
bilingual classes are sometimes found in Serbian
high schools. Children who want and can study in
two languages get there — their curriculum is
conducted in Serbian and another language, for
example, English or French.

Secondary education.
• After primary school, graduates can continue
their studies and enroll in one of the following
educational institutions:
• gymnasiums;
• vocational schools;
• art schools.

Gymnasiums.
• Students who have received high scores in the
final exams can enter the gymnasium. There
they study an extended educational program
and prepare to enter universities or higher
schools of the country. The total duration of
study in Serbian gymnasiums is four years.

Vocational schools.
• Educational institutions of this type are chosen
by students who want to get a professional
education and immediately earn money. The
duration of training in colleges is from three to
four years. During this time, the student masters
the necessary level of knowledge and acquires
the necessary skills in a narrow practical
specialty. It is impossible to enter the university
after vocational schools.

Art schools.
• Art schools open their doors to those graduates
of secondary schools who want to link their
professional activities with art. Here they
receive not only deeper knowledge in general
subjects, but also engage in specialized areas.
After four years of study at the college, you can
apply to higher educational institutions in
Serbia by choosing an art specialty.

Higher education.
• Higher education in Serbia can be obtained in
two types of universities: public;
• private.
• In addition, educational institutions in the
country are divided into two types:
• universities;
• higher schools.

• Universities differ from higher schools in Serbia in
that at universities students receive an academic
education that corresponds to the pan-European one
and consists of three qualification stages: bachelor's
degree (from 3 to 4 years);
• master's degree (from 1 to 2 years);
• Doctor of Philosophy, PhD (3 years).
• And higher schools offer more specialized training
with an emphasis on a narrow professional field. At
the same time, they may also have a graduation
according to educational levels: vocational education
(3 years);
• special vocational education (from 1 to 2 years).

The best universities in Serbia.
• University of Belgrade. The oldest university
opened its doors in 1808. Today it is the largest
university in the country, which includes 31
faculties and 8 research institutes.

• University in Novi Sad. This second-ranked
university in Serbia has been operating since 1960. Its
14 faculties are located in different places of the
autonomous Serbian province of Vojvodina.

• University of the Arts in Belgrade. The university
was founded in 1973 on the basis of the Art
Academy. Nowadays there are four faculties where
students professionally study music, visual, dramatic,
and applied arts.
