Surgical Instruments
1. Surgical Instruments:
The following instruments are used during surgeryMany of these look very similar and may be hard to
distinguish between!
We will break these tools down into smaller subgroups:
Forceps: used to pinch or tweeze tissue
Scissors: used to cut tissue
Scalpel/Needle: used to cut or pierce tissue
Surgical miscellaneous
2. Forceps
Used to grasp and hold objectsYou should be able to identify the following forceps:
Alligator Forceps
Allis tissue Forceps
Babcock tissue Forceps
Crile Forceps
Kelly Forceps
Halstead mosquito hemostatic Forceps
Brown-Adson thumb Forceps
Rat-tooth thumb Forceps
3. Alligator forceps
Used during surgery to remove foreignbodies
There is a right angle and the top blade
is the only part that actually moves
4. Allis tissue forceps
Used during surgery to grasp organs andslippery/dense tissue
Less delicate than Babcock forceps due to the
sharp teeth present at the tip of the blade
5. Babcock tissue forceps
Used during surgery to hold delicatetissue
Similar to Allis Tissue forceps but the tips
are smooth
6. Crile forceps
Used to occlude bleeding before ligation(stops bleeding before closing off a blood
vessel)
Serrations run the full length of the jaws, can
be curved or straight
7. Kelly forceps
Used to occlude bleeding before ligation (stopsbleeding before closing off a blood vessel)
VERY similar to Crile forceps, but serrations only
run about halfway up the distal length of the
jaw, can be curved or straight
8. Halstead mosquito hemostatic forceps
Halsteadforceps
mosquito
hemostatic
Used to occlude bleeding before ligation (stops
bleeding before closing off a blood vessel)
SMALLER than the Crile or Kelly, serrations run
the full length of the jaws, can be curved or
straight
9. Brown-Adson thumb forceps
Used during surgery to grasp and holdtissue, muscle, or skin
Fine serrations are present, there are
no teeth at the tip
10. Rat-tooth thumb forceps
Used during surgery to grasp and hold tissue, muscle, or skin
Difference between Brown-Adison and rat tooth
is the rat tooth has teeth at the tip of the
instrument
11. Scissors
Surgical instruments used for cuttingmaterial and tissue
You should be able to identify the following
scissors:
Suture wire cutting scissors
Bandage scissors
Littauer suture removal scissors
Mayo dissecting scissors
Metzenbaum dissecting scissors
12. Suture wire cutting scissors
Used to cut wire suturesThe blades are serrated, can be curved
or straight
13. Bandage scissors
Used to remove bandagesThere are many types of bandage scissors, but
they will all have a longer bottom blade that has
a blunt tip (helps to prevent cutting skin)
14. Littauer suture removal scissors
Used to cut all kinds of sutures (but wire)Has a hook-shaped bottom blade
Can be curved or straight
15. Mayo dissecting scissors
Used during surgery to cut body tissues andsutures
Have blunt ends with a shorter and broader
shanks than Metzenbaum, can be curved or
straight
16. Metzenbaum dissecting scissors
Used during surgery to cut delicate tissueLonger and more narrow shanks than Mayo
scissors
Can have curved or straight blades
17. Scalpel / Needle Instruments
You will need to identify the following scalpel/needleinstruments:
Scalpel blade
Scalpel handle
Suture needle
Cutting
Taper
Needle holder
Mayo-Hegar
Olsen-Hegar
The needle holders are
used during suturing of
the patient, a ratchet is
present near the finger
rings, meaning that they
lock in place when closed
(this is to prevent the
needle from slipping!)
18. Scalpel blade
Used in surgery to cut through different tissuesAn extremely sharp blade that attaches to a
scalpel handle
19. Scalpel handle
Used during surgery to hold the scalpelblade, making it easier for the surgeon
to manipulate the blade
20. Suture needle - cutting
Often used during surgery to close skin andsubcutaneous tissue
Needle point is triangular with a cutting edge
21. Suture needle - taper
Often used in surgery to close soft tissue (ex.fascia, gastrointestinal tissue, vascular tissue)
No cutting edge on the tip
22. Needle holder (Mayo-Hegar)
Used in surgery to hold the needle while suturingtissue
No cutting blades
23. Needle holder (Olsen-Hegar)
Used in surgery to hold the needle while suturingtissue and to cut suture material
Similar to Mayo-Hegar but also has cutting blades
on the proximal end of the blade
24. Anesthetic Machines
This machine is used to help administeranesthesia to patients
25. Endotracheal tubes
Used during surgery or any other procedurewhere the patient is given general anesthetic
Inserted into the trachea of the patient
26. VOCABULARY
cutting (piercing / pricking) instrument - режущий (колющий)инструмент
sharp (blunt) instrument - острый (тупой) инструмент
pointed (blunt-ended) instrument - остроконечный
