2. Bram Stoker
• Sir Abraham “Bram” Stoker wasborn in Dublin on 8 November 1847.
• Graduated in Mathematics in 1867
and then worked as a civil servant.
• After his marriage he moved to
London and wrote there some
sensational novels including The
Snake’s Pass (1890), Dracula (1897),
The Lady of the Shroud (1909).
• The author died in London on 20
April 1912.
3. Dracula
• The book is written in the genre ofGothic horror. (And that’s the
reason why I’ve chosen this book).
• The narration of the novel consists
of letters and entries in the diaries
of its heroes as well as newspaper
clippings.
4. Setting
• The story begins in the end of the XIX century.• The novel tells the story of Dracula's attempt to move
from Transylvania to England so that he may find new
blood and spread the undead curse; and of the battle
between Dracula and a small group of people led by
Professor Abraham Van Helsing.
5.
(Jonathan Harker and Count Dracula)A young British lawyer Jonathan Harker goes to the Austro-Hungarian region of Transylvania
to Count Dracula, aiming to sell him an estate in England.
On the way to Dracula's castle, Harker notices strange blue lights. Later, Dracula explains that
these blue lights appear in this land at night once a year, in places where treasures are buried,
but superstitious locals are afraid to leave the house that night.
6.
(Abraham Harker and vampire sisters)Dracula is very old and pale man. Harker immediately sells him the abandoned English mansion Carfax,
but then the count forces him to stay for another month. Wandering the Count's castle against Dracula's
admonition, Harker encounters three vampire sisters, from whom he is rescued by Dracula.
Harker soon realizes that Dracula himself is also a vampire. After the preparations are made, Dracula
leaves Transylvania and abandons Harker to the sisters. Harker barely escapes from the castle.
7.
Dracula is leaving for England on a ship in a box. Subsequently, from the ship's magazine itbecomes clear that during the whole voyage Dracula quietly goes out of his drawer and eats the
crew members one by one until the ship lands at the English coastal town of Whitby, but without
a crew and the captain’s corpse at steering wheel. Then the count leaves the ship.
8. Theme and Predictions
• The main theme in this book is thequestion about the good and the
evil.
Which side is going to win?
• Unfortunately, it is obvious from
the very beginning that the evil is
going to lose. I’m not familiar with
the plot but it’s not a secret that
Dracula is going to be killed by Van
Helsing.
9. Language and my experience of reading the book
• The book is quite interesting because of very scarydescription of Dracula’s castle and mostly because of the
language.
• It’s not so difficult to read this book because the author’s
style and the language are not overfilled with very long
complex sentences and unfamiliar words.
