Basics of Reliability Theory. Basic Terms
The basic terms according to Russian standards are: (disclaimer)
• “Dependability” («Надёжность») - The property of an object to retain
over time the ability to perform the required functions in specified
modes and conditions of use, maintenance, storage and
transportation;
• “Reliability” («Безотказность») - The property of an object to
continuously maintain the ability to perform the required functions
for some time or operating time in specified modes and conditions of
use;

Basics of Reliability Theory. Basic Terms
• “Failure” («Отказ») is an event that violates the healthy state of an
object . It may be complete (полный) or partial (частичный);
• “Operating time to failure” («Наработка до отказа») - operating time
of an object from the beginning of its operation to failure;
• “Useful life” («Срок службы») - Calendar duration of operation from
the beginning operation of the facility or its resumption after major
repairs until the limiting state is reached;
• “Limiting state” («Предельное состояние») - The state of the object
in which its further operation is unacceptable or impractical, or
restoration of its working condition is impossible or impractical;
