Kick the bucket
В прямом переводе — пнуть ведро. А на самом деле это соответствует
нашему “сыграть в ящик”, то есть умереть.
The inheritors can’t wait for him to kick the bucket. / Наследники ждут не
дождутся, когда он в ящик сыграет.
Heart in your mouth
Если в русском языке у сильно напуганного человека душа в пятках, то в
английском вот так — сердце во рту. Эта фраза означает крайнюю
степень испуга.
My heart’s in my mouth every time I have to pass the exams. / Я боюсь до
смерти каждый раз, когда приходится экзамены сдавать.
As cool as a cucumber
Мы в таких случаях говорим “спокойный как слон”, а англоговорящие —
“спокойный как огурец”. И в самом деле, можно ли быть спокойнее, чем
этот представитель семейства тыквенных, мирно лежащий на грядке.
I was sure I’d be nervous like hell, but really I’m as cool as a cucumber. / Я
был уверен, что буду чертовски нервничать, но на самом деле я
спокоен как слон.

Blue in the face
Это очень похоже на наше выражение “(делать что-то) до
посинения”. То есть повторять много-много раз и
безрезультатно.
The attorney can talk until he’s blue in the face, but he won’t
convince the judge that this fella is innocent. / Адвокат может
говорить до посинения, но не убедит судью, что этот парень
невиновен.
A storm in a teacup
У нас есть похожая фраза — “буря в стакане воды” — то есть
большой переполох, который подняли вокруг чего-то и
близко не заслуживающего такого внимания. То есть
проблема сильно преувеличена. Но поскольку англичане —
последовательные и фанатичные приверженцы чая, то и
буря у них в чайной чашке и никак иначе.
Please don’t listen to Sarah, she’s always making a storm in
the teacup. / Пожалуйста, не слушайте Сару. Она вечно
устраивает много шума из ничего.

A cast iron stomach
Здесь вполне можно догадаться. Про тех, кто ест самую острую и тяжелую пищу
(или просто ест очень много), пьет все подряд и не страдает от нарушений
пищеварения, у нас тоже говорят — “железный желудок”. Только у англичан он
чугунный.
I think I would be sick if I ate that hot spicy Thai food, but John seems to have a cast
iron stomach. / Думаю, если бы я съел это острое тайское блюдо, мне бы стало
плохо. Но у Джона, похоже, железный желудок.
Finger licking good
Это тоже просто. Мы ведь точно так же характеризуем что-то очень вкусное:
“пальчики оближешь”.
My sister makes the best chowder in Ireland. It’s finger licking good! / Моя сестра
готовит лучший чаудер в Ирландии. Пальчики оближешь.
All talk (mouth) and no trousers
Взгромоздился на трибуну, а сам без штанов. Так характеризуют человека,
который постоянно твердит о грандиозных планах и проектах, но в реальности
ничего не делает. Пустозвон.
Politicians are known to be all mouth and no trousers. / Политики известны тем, что
много обещают, но ничего не делают.

Hairy at the heel
В английской традиции волосатые пятки у того, кто не заслуживает
доверия. По-нашему, держит камень за пазухой. Человек, от которого
можно в любой момент ожидать подлости и удара в спину.
To tell you the truth, I don’t trust Mike. I tried to work with him. He’s a bit hairy
at the heels. / Честно говоря, я не доверяю Майку. Я пытался работать с
ним. Но от него всего можно ожидать.
Chew a rag
С жеванием тряпок эта фраза, конечно, не имеет ничего общего. А вот с
“пережевыванием” сплетен и слухов — вполне. Так говорят именно о
любителях перемывать кости другим за спиной.
We spent the evening watching the TV and chewing the rag. / Мы провели
вечер за просмотром телевизора и сплетнями.
Bob’s your uncle!
Не очень понятно, при чем тут чей-то дядя Боб, но эту фразу произносят,
чтобы подчеркнуть, что сделать что-то очень просто, само собой
разумеется, все получится как надо.
You simply put on the stain remover, leave it for an hour, and Bob’s your
uncle, the stain’s gone! / Ты просто наносишь пятновыводитель, оставляешь
на час, и — оп-ля, пятно исчезло!

Fall off the back of a truck
Это выражение означает, что кто-то пытается купить (или
продать) “левый” товар (скорее всего, краденый).
— Peter says he has some smartphones to sell for cheap. —
Hmm, sounds like they fell off the back of a truck to me. / —
Питер говорит, у него есть несколько дешевых смартфонов
на продажу. — Хм, похоже, они левые какие-то, как по мне.
The lights are on, but nobody’s home
Это характеристика очень тупого человека. “Никого нет
дома”, “пустой чердак”, в общем, так говорят про обладателя
сильно сниженного интеллекта.
She really has no clue. The lights are on, but nobody’s home. /
Она действительно ни во что не врубается. Совсем тупая.

One of the amazing features of a man is a sense of humor, which
unfortunately not everyone has. It's the ability to joke, to make people
smile and understand someone's jokes correctly. Each person has a
sense of humor is individual. There is such a thing - as a national sense of
humor, which is unique and has its own distinctive features. It includes
English humor, which is often written and spoken. The people of England
joke always and everywhere, there are no forbidden subjects for them.
Weather, politics, family values, Queen Elizabeth - they treat everything
with irony. The most surprising thing is when English people joke or tell
funny stories with imperturbable faces against a background of
complete absurdity, and people sometimes do not know how to react in
such situations.
Many do not understand English jokes, especially when they do not
speak the language. For some, the humor of the English is as cold,
repulsive and stiff as they are. But the English are an amazing people,
and even ready to draw these shortcomings in jest, and laugh at the
erroneous opinion of the whole world.
To learn to understand the jokes of the English, one must study their
culture and lifestyle. English humor is a life style, a way of behavior.
Dialogue between the two Englishmen and at the present time looks like
a piquetion with ridiculous phrases. Against the background of serious
conversations, this exchange of jokes looks extremely strange and
unusual. To understand the English humor, it is enough knowledge of the
language and general information about England, but to become a
participant in such conversations, one must be a true Englishman.
