Early Years of Life
Antoine Qu'appelle was born in Paris on April 11,
1661. At the age of eleven, the boy had to leave
with his father for Italy, who was appointed
director of the French Academy of Arts in Rome.
Life in Rome had a great influence on Antoine - he
became acquainted with the works of outstanding
artists, and his favorite master was Correggio.
Antoine was taught painting by his father, who was
considered one of the best painters in France. On
his return from Rome, Antoine enrolled at the elite
Harcourt College, where he studied philosophy and
painting.
Antoine began painting early, and the young
master's talent was noticed by King Louis XIV
Philippe, who entrusted him with the artistic
decoration of the palaces of Marly, Versailles and
Meudon.

Late Years of Life
Antoine soon gained fame as a master of genius
and became the official painter of the House of
Orleans. He quickly became rich doing
commissions, and was later given a luxurious
apartment in the Louvre. For the rest of his life,
the artist had no need for money. He painted,
made engravings and cartoons for the royal
tapestry factory, illustrated books. Antoine was a
prominent and respected man, familiar with
prominent artists. The last five years of his life
Antoine experienced serious health problems, so
he could not do what he loved. Qu'appelle died in
his apartment, leaving his son an enormous
fortune and thousands of brilliant paintings.
