2.1 and 2.2 Safe manual handling
• There will always be a need to lift and carry materials and objects around
a workplace
• Not lifting and carrying correctly can cause injury, e.g.:
• spinal injury
• muscle strain
• cuts and abrasions
• broken bones
• It can also result in damage to:
• materials and equipment
• the work area
• customer’s property

2.3 Regulations
Manual Handling Operations Regulations (MHOR), 2004
• Avoid hazardous manual handling operations where possible
• Carry out a risk assessment
• Employees must take care of:
• take care of their own health and safety
• take care of the health and safety of others who may be affected
by their actions
• tell their employer if they are going to carry out hazardous lifting
Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER), 1998
• Covers equipment used for lifting or lowering loads
• Equipment should be:
• suitable for its intended use
• positioned to avoid accidents
• marked with necessary information
• used by competent people
• checked before use

2.4 Safe lifting (1)
Step 1
Always check the object.
Objects can be heavier than
they look.
Ask someone to help you,
the lift might need one or
more people, or lifting
equipment.
Step 2
Clear your path to where the
object is to be moved, and
make sure there is enough
space to put it down. Adopt a
secure stance, with legs
shoulder width apart on either
side of the object.

2.7 Reporting a problem
• You must not simply ignore a health and safety problem
• If there is a health and safety related problem:
1. speak to the employer or person in control and try to sort out the
issue
2. contact your work/safety representative, or your trade
union safety representative
3. report the problem to the HSE
If an accident takes place, the requirements of the RIDDOR
Regulations must be followed – see Unit 1 slides
