The Bronze Horseman by Falconet
One of the most beautiful and famous equestrian monuments in the world
is dedicated to the Russian Emperor Peter I. It is located in St. Petersburg on
Senate Square and is a unique piece of Russian and world culture. The
grandiose monument, symbolizing the courage and greatness of the
famous ruler, is more than two centuries old and has a history full of facts
and myths.

History of the monument's name
In 1833, the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin wrote the famous poem
"The Bronze Horseman," which gave the second name to the monument.
This expression has become almost official.

History of monument creation
The history of the grandiose monument dates back to the reign of Empress
Catherine II. Wishing to perpetuate the memory of the reforming Tsar,
Catherine commands the erection of a monument to Peter I. For this
purpose, the Russian envoy in Paris Dmitry Golitsyn concludes a contract
with the famous French sculptor Falcone.

Symbol of St.
Petersburg
Almost 230 years have passed since the
monument was erected, but even now, as many
decades ago, it continues to fascinate by its depth
of creative thought, being a symbol of the city
founded by Peter the Great
