• Two young men, Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic, met
for the first time in high school, but did not notice each
other for a long time. They became friends, only often
visiting the same rehearsal base of The Melvins.
• Cobain, who became a guitarist and vocalist in the
future, for a long time persuaded Novoselic to create his
own band, but the bassist did not agree. 3 years after
the guys met, in 1987, Krist listened to a recording of
Fecal Matter, Kurt's first project, and offered to create a
team himself.

The beginning of the group
• In 1989, Nirvana became a part of the Seattle
music scene, releasing the debut album Bleach on
the independent label Sub Pop. After signing a
contract with a major label DGC Records, Nirvana
gained unexpected success with the song «Smells
Like Teen Spirit» from her second album
Nevermind, released in 1991. Subsequently,
Nirvana entered the music mainstream,
popularizing the alternative rock subgenre called
grunge. Kurt Cobain turned out to be not just a
musician in the eyes of the media, but the «voice
of the generation», and Nirvana became the
flagship of Generation X

Early years
• Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic first met at Aberdeen High
School, but, according to Cobain, did not communicate for
a long time. They became friends, often visiting the
rehearsal base of the band The Melvins. Cobain wanted to
create his own musical group together with Novoselic, but
Krist did not agree for a long time. Three years after they
met, Krist finally listened to a recording of Fecal Matter,
Cobain’s first project, and invited Kurt to start playing
together. The first drummer of the band was Bob
McFadden, who left the band a month later. In the winter
of 1987, Krist and Kurt hired drummer Aaron Burkhardt.
Initially, the trio performed Fecal Matter compositions,
but soon the musicians began to write new material.
