Viktor Tsoi was born in
Leningrad on June 21, 1962 in
the family of physical
education teacher Valentina
Vasilievna Tsoi and engineer
Robert Maksimovich Tsoi. The
parents were such different
people that it was generally
unclear how they lived
together. Victor had no
brothers or sisters. His
mother was Russian, a native
of Leningrad, and his father
was Korean, originally from
Kazakhstan, and spoke
Russian rather poorly.

3.

In 1969, Victor went to school
where his mother worked. In
total, during his education
until the eighth grade, he
changed three schools.
Tsoi showed a penchant for
drawing from early childhood,
so his parents enrolled him in
art school from the fourth
grade, where he studied until
1977.

4.

Music, like drawing, was one of
Victor’s constant hobbies. His parents
gave him his first guitar in the fifth
grade. While studying at art school, he
met Maxim Pashkov, with whom he
later organized the group "Палата
№6".
In 1977, he graduated from eight
classes and entered the art school
named after. V. Serov, to the design
department. But fonts and posters
were a burden to him. My passion for
music brought me much more
satisfaction.

5.

In 1979, he was expelled from school “for poor
academic performance,” after which he went
to work at a factory and entered evening
school. Later he studied at SGPTU No. 61,
specializing in wood carving, after which he
worked for a short time in the restoration
workshops of the Catherine Palace Museum in
the city of Pushkin, Leningrad Region.
In 1980, Tsoi began performing at apartment
concerts in Moscow together with members of
the «Автоматические удовлетворители»
group. In 1981, he made his stage debut as a
bass guitarist in the Leningrad cafe "Трюм".
From these concerts, in the summer of 1981,
the group “Garin and the Hyperboloids” arose,
which included Viktor Tsoi, Alexey Rybin and
Oleg Valinsky. In the fall of 1981, the group
entered the Leningrad rock club. After Oleg
Valinsky left, the group was renamed “Кино”.

6.

In 1982, the «Кино»
group made its debut
on the stage of the
Leningrad Rock Club,
after which the first
album of the group
“45” was released,
produced by Boris
Grebenshchikov
(leader of the
«Аквариум» group).
In the fall of 1982, he
worked as a
woodcarver at a
gardening trust.

7.

In the second half of 1984,
the second line-up of the
«Кино» group was
formed, which included:
Viktor Tsoi (guitar, vocals),
Yuri Kasparyan (guitar,
vocals), Georgy "Gustav"
Guryanov (drums, vocals),
Alexander Titov (bass,
vocals) ). After some time,
Igor Tikhomirov came to
replace Titov.

8.

On February 4, 1984, Tsoi
married a girl named
Maryana, who since 1982
worked as an
administrator of the Kino
collective. On August 5,
1985, their son Alexander
was born. The couple
separated several years
before the musician’s
death, but the couple did
not officially divorce.

9.

In 1986, the groups “Кино” and
“Аквариум” performed a
concert program in the USA and
recorded the album “Красная
волна” there.
In the fall of 1986, Viktor Tsoi
got a job as a driver at the
famous Kamchatka boiler house.
In the spring of 1987, the last performance took
place at the rock club festival, where the «Кино»
group received a prize “for creative majority.”

10.

In addition to his musical creativity,
Viktor Tsoi was also known for his
work in cinema. He starred in the
films "Йа хха!" (dir. Rashid
Nugmanov), “Конец каникул” (dir.
Sergei Lysenko), “Рок” (dir. Alexey
Uchitel) and “Асса” (dir. Sergei
Solovyov). In Rashid Nugmanov's film
"Игла" (1988), Viktor Tsoi, who had
already become legendary by that
time, played the main role of Moreau.

11.

August 15, 1990 at 12
noon. 28 min. Viktor Tsoi
died tragically in a car
accident while returning
from a night fishing trip to
Jurmala while driving a
«Москвич». Tsoi's car
crashed into the «Икарус»
passenger bus. According
to investigators, the singer
fell asleep at the wheel.

12.

After the death of Viktor
Tsoi, the «Кино»
musicians decided to
finalize and release their
last album. In December
1990, the last “Чёрный
альбом”, dedicated to
Viktor Tsoi, was
released. The «Кино»
group ceased to exist.

13.

In 1990, after Tsoi’s death
in Moscow, the “Viktor Tsoi
Wall” spontaneously
appeared on Krivoarbatsky
Lane, which became an
unofficial place of worship
for the leader of the
«Кино» group. Fans of the
group covered the wall with
the inscriptions «Кино»,
“Tsoi is alive”, quotes from
his songs and declarations
of love to the musician. The
wall, scrawled with the
words “Victor, you are
God” and “Tsoi is alive,”
comes to life twice a year,
on June 21, on his birthday,
and on August 15, on his
death.
