ROPE ACCESS
Rope access is a series of
techniques used to access areas of
equipment without conventional
scaffold, mobile or other
platforms
The process uses ropes or a series
of ropes to get people into a
specified position to carry out
some task whilst maintaining two
anchor points at all times

Various companies have invested in this
technique
Prevalent in offshore industry but becoming
more widely used onshore
People who are trained to IRATA guidelines and
certified to carry out this type of work

REQUIRED TRAINING
The training is carried out to a recognized
industry standard commonly known as
IRATA (Industrial Rope Access Trade
Association)
Three levels of grading (1, 2 & 3) are used
to differentiate between training and
experience levels of technicians (3 being
the highest)

SAFETY MEASURES
The works are carried out under the permit
to work system using pertinent permit for
tasks
Safety manual are updated to include
reference to rope access for working at
height
Barriers are used to identify area below rope
access work zone
Team comprises of a level 3 technician and
at least one other member

RESCUE METHODS
All rope access technicians
are trained in rescue
techniques
Level 3 technician is trained
to carry our rescue if
personnel are unable to self
rescue
Each team carries a rescue
pack which can be quickly
deployed
Rescue plan prepared for
each new task performed

ROPE ACCESS INSPECTIONS AND WORKS
Inspection (inspection of tanks, piping towers,
flare stack, mooring structures, structures of
submersible and fixed oil platforms)
Painting (includes shot blasting and either
brush or spray painting)
Insulation (insulation replacement on piping
or vessels)
Welding (complicated slightly by the need to
run cables)
Mechanical works (repairs to steam tracing,
nozzle and hose replacement or replacement
of supports)
Cable running (installation of new
instruments on towers)
Pipefitting (ideal for use with Lokring)

Demonstration is carried out for the safety
