• Altai is not my native land, but I
would really like to visit it. The
mountain system is located on the
border of Russia and Mongolia, China,
and Kazakhstan. The Altai Mountains
are the watershed between the Arctic
Ocean basin and the drainless region
of Central Asia. The highest point is
Mount Belukha (4506 m).

• The first information about the settlers in the Altai Mountains dates
back to ancient times. From the turn of the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC to
the end of the 1st century AD, the lands of the Altai Mountains were
under the domination of the Huns. Then the Altai tribes fell under the
rule of the Turkic Khaganate, after the collapse of which (588) the second
Turkic khaganate arose. Then it was the turn of the Uighur Khanate. His
fall predetermined the defeat inflicted on him in 840 by the Yenisei
Kyrgyz, who levied tribute from the Altaians with furs and iron products.
At the beginning of the 10th century. Altai passes to the Khitans, who
were replaced by the Naimans in the 12th century. In the middle of the
15th century, as a result of feudal wars, the population of Altai fell into
the sphere of influence of the Western Mongols (Dzungars). It was under
their domination until the entry of the Southern Altai into Russia in
1756 (the northern Altaians became Russian subjects much earlier).
• In December 1917, Soviet power was established in Altai. In 1922-47,
the Altai Republic was called the Oirot Autonomous Region, in1948-90 the Gorno—Altai Autonomous Region as part of the Altai Territory. In
1991, the region was transformed into the Gorno-Altai Republic within
the Russian Federation, in May 1992 — into the Altai Republic.
