The siege of Leningrad
(08.09.1941 – 27.01.1944)
Is a military blockade undertaken by
the Nazi army against the Soviet city
of Leningrad.
The siege began on the 8th September
1941 when the Wehrmacht
(armed forces of Nazi Germany)
severed the last road to the city.
Adolf Hitler wanted to destroy the
city for several reasons, but the main
goal was to cause moral and political
damage on all Soviet citizens.

The faith of people
The citizens of Leningrad lived in
inhuman conditions.
Winters of 1942-1944 were extremely
cold. People didn’t have a central
heating. They had to burn a lot of
household items to heat themselves.
They had only 125 g. of bread for one
person by one day. There a was a
starvation. 3% of died citizens was
killed by bombs and 97% from famine.
Almost whole population of Leningrad
was working in factories to make
bullets, mortars and guns.

The breakthrough of
the siege of Leningrad
The siege of Leningrad was broken because
of an operation Iskra, which had been
lasting in period of 12-30th January 1943. In
result the city got more food and electricity.
Plans of the Nazi authority were totally
disrupted.
Later, in period of 14th January to 1st March
1944 the Soviet Union made the LeningradNovgorod strategic offensive with an attack
on the German Army Group.
On 27th January 1944 the Soviet Union
declared that Leningrad is fully freed from
the invaders.

In memory of the Victory
Victory square is a place of the monument
of the Heroic Defenders of Leningrad, which
commemorate the victims of the siege of the city.
The monument was erected in 1975 on the 30th
anniversary of the end of the war. The
monument represents by a 48-high obelisk and
subterranean hall of memory.
The monument was designed by Sergey
Speransky, Valentin Kamensky and sculpted by
Mikhail Anikushin.

The ribbon of the Leningrad Victory
The ribbon distributed through social action, which
happened in 2009, 2014, 2019 and 2024 by the
government of Saint-Petersburg in honour of the heroic
deed of Leningrad’s Defenders.
An olive colour of the ribbon symbolized the victory
A green colour symbolized people’s life.
