15. Stream of consciousness

originated in the
late 19th and early 20th century as part of
modernist literature. Many of the writers
who pioneered the use of stream of
consciousness were attempting to create new
literary techniques to better represent the
human experience—especially in a modern,
urban, industrialized world.

Stream
of
consciousness writing
refers to a narrative
technique where the
thoughts and emotions
of
a
narrator
or
character are written
out such that a reader
can track the fluid
mental state of these
characters.

18. Which is the main features of the stream of consciousness novel?

The salient features of stream of
consciousness are as follows: Description of
the continuous flow of unspoken thoughts or
perceptions of the character. The character's
thoughts and feelings are depicted as
overheard in the mind or addressed to
oneself. Chiefly concerned with the
subjective description of life.

19. Why is stream of consciousness used?

Writers use stream of consciousness
writing to mimic the way people's thoughts
flow. We very rarely think in a perfect, linear
order. The stream of consciousness technique
uses unusual, often grammatically incorrect,
sentence structure full of incomplete
thoughts and tangents to illustrate how a
character thinks.

20. What is Atonement by Ian McEwan about?

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A symphonic novel
of love and war, childhood and class, guilt
and forgiveness that provides all the
satisfaction of a brilliant narrative and the
provocation we have come to expect from
the
acclaimed
Booker
Prize–winning,
internationally bestselling author.

21. Is Atonement true story?

No,
Atonement is not based on a true
story. Briony Tallis, who is set up as the
novel's author and narrator, is no more real
than her story. Through Briony, Ian McEwan
examines the responsibility of authors to
present an accurate picture of the world to
their readers, even if the stories they are
telling are fictional.
