Picture of Dorian Gray
In 1891, he published The Picture of Dorian
Gray. The novel is a cautionary tale about a beautiful
young man, Dorian Gray, who wishes (and receives his
wish) that his portrait ages while he remains youthful
and lives a life of sin and pleasure.
In the preface to the novel, Oscar proclaims his
principles of the "aesthetic movement”.
“The artist is the creator of beautiful things. To
reveal art and conceal the artist is art’s aim. The critic is
he who can translate into another manner or a new
material his impression of beautiful things.”
Though the novel is now revered as a great
and classic work, at the time critics were outraged by
the book's apparent lack of morality

The Canterville Ghost
This novella combines Gothic and humorous
elements. It tells the story of an American family who
moves into a haunted English mansion, only to deal with
the ghost in a completely untraditional way, reflecting
Wilde's playful subversion of traditional ghost stories.
“Indeed, it was not easy to distinguish her from a
real Englishwoman, and her example once again
confirmed that there are surprisingly many similarities
between us and America — almost everything, except, of
course, the language.”

The Importance of Being Earnest
One of Wilde's most famous plays, this comedy
of manners satirizes the British upper class. It centers on
mistaken identities and witty dialogues, illustrating Wilde’s
skill in blending humor with social commentary.
“It is always worth while asking a question,
though it is not always worth while answering one.”
