What are Conditionals?
In conditional sentences, the action or situation in the main
clause is the result of the if/when clause. Look at
some examples.
If I had studied harder, I would have passed the test.
If she hadn’t lost her phone, she would have called me.
Are these situations in the past or in the present?
Reveal Answer
In the past

4.

What are Third Conditionals?
We use third conditionals to talk about imaginary results of past
actions that didn’t happen.
If I had studied harder, I would have passed the test.
= They didn’t study very hard so they didn’t pass the test.
If she hadn’t lost her phone, she would have called me.
= She lost her phone so she couldn’t call him.

5.

What are Third Conditionals?
We use the past perfect tense with would + have + past
participle. We can also use modal verbs such as could or might.
Look at two more examples.
If I hadn’t moved to another city, we would have
stayed friends.
= They moved city so they didn’t stay friends.
If we hadn’t scored that final goal, we might not
have won the game.
= They did score the final goal so they won the game.

6.

Third Conditionals
Like all conditional sentences, we can change the sentence
structure with no change in meaning. Look at the example from
the previous slide.
If I hadn’t moved to another city, we would have stayed friends.
Or…
We would have stayed friends if I hadn’t moved to another city.
What differences can you see?
• The two sentences have changed order.
• ‘If..’ is in the middle of the sentence.
• There isn’t a comma. (,)
