• China is the fourth biggest country
in the world.

What Is China Like?

There are mountains where it snows
most of the year.
There are also jungles. It is very hot
and humid.
The Himalayas are in China
Rivers are very important in China.
The wheat and rice fields in China
need lots of water.

What Are Chinese People Like?
• Chinese culture is very unique.
• Chinese people mainly speak
Mandarin. Some also speak
Cantonese, Hakka, or Swatow. This
depends on which part of the
country they are from.
• Rice is eaten with nearly every meal.

When Is Chinese New Year?
• The Chinese New Year starts between
late January and early February.
• The date changes from year to year.
• It follows an ancient farmer calendar.
• This is based on phases of the moon.

Preparing for the New Year
• Chinese people spring clean their
houses and gardens. They do this
to sweep away any bad luck.
• Houses are decorated with paper
scrolls and lanterns. They have
good luck phrases on them about
happiness and wealth.
• Any unfinished business is settled.
This is done to have a fresh start
for the new year.
• Debts are paid and conflicts are
resolved.

• Families gather together and have a large,
traditional feast.
• Some people eat jiaozi, a steamed dumpling.
• Others eat nian gao - a sticky, sweet rice
pudding.
• People stay up until midnight. They set off
fireworks to scare away evil spirits.

• Children get red envelopes from
their parents and grandparents.
They are filled with money and
sweets.
• Every family member starts the day
with brand-new clothes.
Red is a very popular color for
clothing. It is considered lucky.
• Most Chinese families gather
together for a New Year's banquet.
• Each family has their own special
dish they prepare for this time.

The Second Day
• It is believed to be the birthday of all dogs,
so dogs are treated with special foods.
• It is also a time for visiting families.

The Third and Fourth Day
The Third Day
• Chinese people believe
they should not visit friends
and relatives on this day.
• They visit the Temple of
Wealth. They have their
futures told.
The Fourth Day
• There are spring dinners.
Businesses have dinners and
social events for their
employees.

The Fifth-Ninth Days
• The 5th Day - Dumplings are eaten for good luck. Some
people set off firecrackers. Cai Shen, the Chinese God of
Wealth's birthday, is celebrated.
• The 6th Day - Families usually send away the ghost of
poverty. They welcome the beautiful days in the new year.
• The 7th Day - This is considered everyone's birthday.
• The 8th Day - This is the eve of the Jade Emperor's
birthday. Special family dinners are held. Most people go
back to work.
• The 9th Day - This is the Jade Emperor's birthday. People
light incense and offer prayers.

The Tenth-Fourteenth Days
• The 10th Day - People continue to
honor the Jade Emperor.
• The 11th and 12th Day - Family
dinners take place.
• The 13th Day - People eat
vegetarian meals to give their
stomachs a rest!
• The 14th Day - People rest and
prepare for the Lantern Festival.
This takes place on the last day
of the Chinese New Year.

The Fifteenth Day
• The last day is also known as the
Lantern Festival.
• There are dragon and lion
dancing parades in the streets.
All the streets are crowded
with people.
• Families walk the streets carrying
lit lanterns.
• Candles are lit outside homes.
