Ireland!

2.

Introduction
Ireland is a nation of barbarians that
has become the best state to do
business in.
A small island country in the west of
Europe with a very interesting history
and traditions. In this presentation you
can see a comparison of Russian and
Irish cultures: folklore, customs,
national dishes and holidays.
And also some interesting facts about
Ireland, the formation of its language
and culture.

3.

Folklore
As you know, Russia and Ireland, although
European countries, are on completely
different parts of the continent, so their
folklore is quite different.
Take the popular Irish legend “The Salmon
of Knowledge” - a well-known story from
Irish folklore, imbued with magic and
secrets, emphasizing the importance of
wisdom and knowledge.

4.

Irish traditions and rules for exchanging
gifts
The shaping of Ireland's customs was very much influenced by their isolationism. Since
Ireland was not touched by either the Romans or the Anglo-Saxons, for about 5,000 years,
until 1169, their culture developed on its own and did not tolerate mixing.
An example of established customs.
Babhdóir: the matchmaking ritual is among the oldest customs, familiar to Slavs too marriages between Irish families were once helped by special matchmakers. They are still
working now, helping couples to find love.
Flowers as a gift: when presenting someone with a bouquet of flowers, avoid lilies, because
white flowers are firmly associated with death and are used only at funerals.

5.

National cuisine
The national cuisine of Ireland is hearty and somewhat rough. The set of dishes in
Ireland is quite simple, consisting mainly of meat, cheese, seafood and potatoes. But
you should still pay tribute to the traditional cuisine of Ireland - even simple dishes are
prepared in a special way.
By the 21st century, much of the traditional Irish cuisine was being revitalized. Typical
dishes include Irish stew, bacon and cabbage, bockstie, black bread (as it is called in
the south) or soda bread (mainly used in Ulster), coddle and colcannon.

Ireland landscape
• The surface is mostly flat, the interior is
occupied by the vast Central Lowland, in the
west and east extending to the shores of the
island. On the outskirts of the island there
are low mountains (the highest point is
Mount Carantuill, 1041 m) and plateaus.
There are many rivers, lakes and marshes
(in the central part). Ireland is crossed from
west to east by a number of canals. Warm
westerly winds prevail. Climate is temperate
oceanic, humid; winters are mild, summers
are cool. Warm westerly winds prevail. Due
to the mild climate Ireland is covered with
greenery all year round, for which it became
known as the Emerald Isle.

The intricacies of tourism
Tourism in Ireland is widely developed due to the beautiful views, excursions, delicious
beer and extensive history.
Residents of the Russian Federation to visit Ireland require a visa and insurance, but
fear not, to obtain the necessary authorization will only need to fill out an application
form on the website, submit documents and pay the fee. The average cost of all
procedures is 60 euros (5.500 rubles).
The best months to visit Ireland are July and August. At this time you will find pleasant,
not hot weather, which will improve the experience of staying in this beautiful country.

Holidays and events
Since the Irish are a very religious people, the most important holiday for them is St.
Patrick's Day, celebrated on March 17 on the occasion of the baptism of Ireland.
The whole country dresses head to toe in the national green color, draws on the faces
of the flag of Ireland and shamrock - its symbol. On this day it is customary to dance
national dances, participate in the parade, have fun and get drunk to the brim.
It is also worth noting the Irish version of Halloween - Samhain.
Samhain is a Celtic holiday, a celebration of the end of summer and harvest.

The formation of the
Irish language
The Irish language belongs to the Indo-European
language group. It split from Goidelic around the
4th century AD.
It is one of the two official state languages of
Ireland, on a par with English.
Although the exact total number of speakers of
this language is unknown, scientists estimate the
number at 70 thousand.
Unfortunately, their number is decreasing due to
poor transmission of the language by the older
generation to the younger and emigration to the
cities.

Why are there more Irish people in the
U.S. than in Ireland itself?
In the mid-16th century, Great Britain, led by Henry VIII, invaded and conquered Ireland,
causing poverty, famine and a marked increase in mortality in the occupied territory.
The Irish did not tolerate this attitude and began to gather in opposition movements
(POI, 1791). Joining forces with French revolutionaries, the first organized Irish rebellion
broke out in 1798, but it was quickly suppressed by the strong British Army. The
defeated Irish, in search of a better life, began partial resettlement in America. As a
result, more than 85% of the Irish, by heritage, live in the United States of America
(about 33 million people).
