The Word "Halloween“The name comes from a Christian holiday. "Hallow" is an old word for a
holy person or a saint. "Een" is a short form of "evening." So,
"Halloween" simply means "Holy Evening."
It was the night before "All Hallows' Day" (or All Saints' Day), which
is on November 1st. Over time, "All Hallows' Evening" was shortened
to "Hallowe'en" and finally became "Halloween."
(Interesting fact: This Christian holiday was placed on a date very
close to an old Celtic festival called Samhain, a time when people
believed spirits could walk the earth. This is where many of the
spooky traditions come from.)
